This is due to our unique geography, “the fire and ice” of volcanoes and glaciers. Icelandic bedrock is largely made up of a kind of basalt that is both lava and bedrock. This allows melting glacier water to be geologically purified through layers of young lava. Because it contains only trace amounts of dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium, Icelandic water is very soft, and therefore less likely to leave a drying or irritating mineral deposit on skin and hair. Nor does our water require fabric softeners or limescale treatments. Because it is one of the purest waters in the world, Icelanders are proud to drink it straight from the tap—thus reducing plastic bottle use.
